Our Guide to Auckland

Auckland is a city with true global appeal. A thriving metropolis which sees people from all four corners of the world come together to create a wonderful city just waiting to be discovered.

Auckland is jam-packed with things to do. Whether you’re on a romantic weekend getaway and you’re looking for somewhere special for dinner or you’re on a girls’ weekend looking for some fun activities and a great place to grab a cocktail, Auckland has it all.

The Hotel Grand Windsor enjoys a prime location right in the heart of the city on bustling Queen Street. From here, the world is your oyster. With an awesome transport network right on your doorstep, the city is waiting to be explored. Here are 5 of our top tips to get you started:

5 of the best things to do in Auckland

1. Volcano Hunting
With over 50 volcanoes in the Auckland region, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore. Two of the most famous are Rangitoto, the volcanic island that sits just off Auckland’s coastline and Mt Eden which offers 360° views of the city and beyond. Both are within easy reach of the Hotel Grand Windsor by foot (and ferry).

2. Explore Waiheke Island
Just a short 45 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland is the bohemian Waiheke Island. Take a day out of the hustle and bustle of Auckland and enjoy a day wine tasting and exploring the stunning beaches on Waiheke Island. Catch the late ferry back and enjoy an amazing sunset which sets over the city skyline.

3. Walking Auckland’s Bays
Auckland offers so much diversity. If you’re looking to stretch your legs, head out to one of Auckland’s Bays. Located to the south of the city, you can either walk from the city or we can get you a taxi to discover hip Mission Bay, Kohimarama or St Heliers – the perfect place to grab a coffee, a spot of lunch of an afternoon ice cream.

4. Wild West Coast
It’s only 40kms from Auckland’s east to west coast (shorter in places). If you have a car, we recommend taking the spectacular trip out along Scenic Drive to the wild west coast beaches of Piha, Muriwai or Bethells where you can feel the black volcanic sand between your toes and watch the surfers riding the waves.

5. Downtown Auckland
If you are looking for a true city break, there is plenty to discover right on your doorstep. Step out of the Hotel Grand Windsor straight onto Queen Street and from there you can head off to the Sky Tower, down to the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter or take a trip further afield to trendy Ponsonby.

Auckland has so much to see and do. If you are looking for more great tips, make sure you speak to the Hotel Concierge or any of the team here at the Hotel Grand Windsor and they will be more than happy to provide you with some recommendations.
