HOTEL GRAND WINDSOR LAUNCHES PARTNERSHIP WITH AUCKLAND ZOO

Much-needed funds to support conservation efforts in the wild, around New Zealand and overseas, will be getting a boost thanks to the mindfulness and generosity of guests at Hotel Grand Windsor, Auckland’s leading boutique accommodation.

From 1 February 2020, guests will be encouraged to decline arrival amenities placed in rooms, such as chocolates and cheese plates, with $10 instead being directly donated to Auckland Zoo.

“This is the perfect example of how a wildlife conservation science organisation like Auckland Zoo can collaborate with our industry to benefit our wildlife,” said Auckland Zoo’s Tourism Sales Manager, Adam Taylor-Eruera.  “We encourage more of our ropu to embrace kaitiakitanga/conservation.”

Along with conservation work for endangered native species on-site (like breed-for-release programmes) and staff working out in the wild throughout Aotearoa, through its  Conservation Fund, Auckland Zoo also funds projects helping save wildlife in the wild here in New Zealand and overseas – collectively its Wild Work. To date, Auckland Zoo has contributed over $4million to conservation partners in New Zealand, the South Pacific, South and Central America, and many countries within Asia and Africa. Benefiting from this support are kea, kakapo, Sumatran orangutans and tigers, Asian elephant, giraffe, rhino, Nepalese red panda, and many other vulnerable species.

Welcome cards and an explanation of the initiative at check-in will help to educate guests on the partnership and the way they can contribute, further adding to the unique experience according to Hotel Grand Windsor General Manager, Christopher Dickinson.

“Dedication to supporting sustainability and conservation is intrinsic to our team and organisation, so sharing this passion and finding ways for our guests to get involved is a natural opportunity,” says Mr Dickinson. “We are thrilled to be introducing this initiative with the Auckland Zoo and look forward to not just contributing financially but also raising awareness around the important work they do. “We are inviting our manuhiri/guests to be kaitiaki/guardians of our natural world.”

Auckland Zoo, kaitiaki of Auckland’s zoo and the environment, is an award-winning not-for-profit wildlife conservation science organisation passionate about its mission ‘to bring people together to build a future for wildlife’.  The zoo exists to give its visitors unique opportunities and experiences to connect and learn with each other in nature to inspire a love and lifelong care for wildlife and wild places,  to provide its animals with the highest level of care and quality of life, and to save wildlife in the wild through all its Wild Work.  It is only through the support of everyone who visits Auckland Zoo that this is achieved.
