Auckland High Tea

Located in the heart of Queen Street at the Hotel Grand Windsor, Cooke’s Restaurant & Bar is one of the newest venues to enjoy high tea in Auckland.

There is a rather lovely symmetry between the history of high tea and the history of our very own Hotel Grand Windsor. Constructed in 1928, the building was originally built by restaurant and soda fountain company W.R Cooke & Son and began life as a tea-room and soda fountain.
Since the refurbishment of the hotel in 2017, we have gone back to our roots and the restoration of high tea to Cooke’s Restaurant & Bar is one of the final pieces in the puzzle.

History of High Tea

The history of high tea is a little bit clouded. Some believe it was a meal for the working class, taken standing up or sitting on tall stools, thus ‘high’ tea. Others believe it was a meal for the upper class, taken at the table as opposed to afternoon tea which was taken whilst seated in low, comfortable chairs or sofas.

Whatever the origins, high tea has become synonymous with indulgence and our very own high tea, named Vari-tea for the wide variety of teas available retains all of the traditions of the original high teas from the mid-1700s.
